Hello and welcome! Please understand that this website is not affiliated with Balmain in any way, it is only a reference page for collectors and those who have enjoyed the classic fragrances of days gone by.

The main objective of this website is to chronicle the history of the Balmain fragrances and showcase the bottles and advertising used throughout the years.

However, one of the other goals of this website is to show the present owners of the Balmain perfume company how much we miss the discontinued classics and hopefully, if they see that there is enough interest and demand, they will bring back these fragrances!

Please leave a comment below (for example: of why you liked the fragrance, describe the scent, time period or age you wore it, who gave it to you or what occasion, any specific memories, what it reminded you of, maybe a relative wore it, or you remembered seeing the bottle on their vanity table), who knows, perhaps someone from the current Balmain brand might see it.

Jolie Madame by Balmain c1950

Jolie Madame by Balmain: launched in 1950. In USA in 1953. Created by Germaine Cellier.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does the original formula smell like? It is classified as a animalic floral chypre fragrance for women.  On a base of fine leather and Abyssinian civet. With a hint of vetiver, a bouquet develops dominated by Anatolian rose, daffodil, and cassia extracted from the Farnèze acacia.
  • Top notes: neroli, daffodil, cassia, bergamot, coriander, gardenia, artemisia
  • Middle notes: jonquil, orris, Anatolian rose de mai, jasmine, tuberose, lilac, violet, orange blossom
  • Base notes: patchouli, oakmoss, musk, castoreum, amber, cedar, leather, vetiver, Abyssinian civet

Femme, 1950:
"Very different and essentially urban, Pierre Balmain's latest creation flourishes in lace, rare furs and the soft woolens of a Parisian coquette. Her name is Jolie Madame. It is discreet, capricious, enveloping, rich in flamboyant smells. “Like a pretty woman that it is, this perfume keeps its secret,” one connoisseur rightly said."
